Field Journals

Keeping good journals is an important part of a field scientist's trade, as it creates a permanent record of what you saw, when you saw it, AND it helps you remember what you learned and integrate concepts and findings together.

In this class students are using the Grinnell method, where they use small waterproof notebooks in the field, and then at night translate those into journal entries documenting what organisms they encountered, what processes and scientists they learned about, and how they interpreted their research experience.

As Joseph Ginnell said in 1907 "You can’t tell in advance which observations will prove valuable. Do record them all!"

I am impressed with the work the students are doing on these, and wanted to share a few examples!
