Pre-Summer Trip was a HUGE Success!

I just went down for a very short visit to Bahía de los Ángeles to pay some of our contractors for the summer and otherwise prepare for the Study Abroad course, and things went super well! I could (and often do) go on and on, but the highlights were:

1. It was absolutely beautiful. The Smoke trees were in bloom all down the gulf coast; the Elephant trees as well; and the water was amazing.
2. I met up with my colleague Sula Vanderplank, who is making so much of this happen, and with some of the guest speakers and pangeros we are working with this summer, including Ricardo Arce (who I have known since he was practically a kid); Jonathan Garcia (a charming and talented panguero who has been in Bahía de los Ángeles for the past 8 or 10 years), Antonio Resendiz, who I first met in 1994 when he was a little kid, and who now runs Campo Archelon; Guadalupe (“Lupita”) Cornejo, who works for Pronatura, a conservation NGO in Mexico; and Augusto Olmos, a conservationist and specialist in renewable energy, who drove up from Loreto to meet us. 
3. We had a wonderful day on the water, training the folks who will be helping us with pitfall traps so they are ready to go when the class arrives, but also catching fish, making ceviche, and testing out our waterproof gps trackers for the algae “islands” we will be studying.
4. Best of all, we ended the trip with a wonderful dinner from our fresh caught yellowtail (I am not responsible at all - it was mostly Augusto who did the cooking!). We had Ricardo, Jonathan, his wife Anai, and his charming three year old Esmerelda over to join us. Equally awesome, Lupita and some of her friends came over later for a glass of wine and some guacamole!
5. The one downside was that it was such a brief trip. It was a full day drive down, then a day on the water, then a full day drive back. But considering the accomplishments and meeting old (and making new!) friends, it was well worth it!
